July 25, 2011, Hemel Hempstead. Gyron today announced that it had commenced work to bring online an additional datacentre in Hemel Hempstead, in the South East of England. When open for customer occupation in Q1 2012, the new Maylands facility will complement the existing Centro facility, also in Hemel Hempstead, that was opened by the company in 2009.

Maylands Datacentre

Conveniently located close to the M1 and M25 motorways encircling London, the new facility is set within a secure private 170,000 sq ft compound with 66,000 sq ft of datacentre space and 22,000 sq ft of associated offices and disaster recovery areas. The site will feature dual redundant 8MW power supplies from two dedicated on-site HV substations, as well as diverse connections to multiple fibre optic connectivity providers.

State-of-the art security measures will be in place, including 24/7 on-site security staff, full digital CCTV coverage, Government certified vehicular impact protection, blast proof windows, and prison specification electrified perimeter fencing.

Gyron’s Managing Director, Robin Balen, also revealed that Gyron had already pre-signed agreements with customers for over 1MW of critical IT load. He added, “We’re delighted to announce that with our 3MW Centro facility at nearly 90% occupancy after less than two years operation, we’ve been able to bring forward our expansion plans. The new Maylands datacentre will give us capacity for up to an additional 1,200 racks to continue to support our customers’ most critical IT applications.”

Retail and wholesale colocation services will both be available at the facility, all with best-in-class resiliency and energy efficiency. The Maylands datacentre has been master planned to support 6 individual data suites, each with the capacity to host 1MW of customer IT load and supporting rack densities of up to 28kW and a PUE of between 1.2 and 1.3 with full 2N power resiliency.

Ben Miller, Operations Director, continued, “Like our Centro facility, we are aiming to source all of the energy requirements for the Maylands datacentre from 100% green renewable sources. We will also be extending our existing ISO 14001 accreditation to cover the new facility, and will be implementing the best practices recommended by The Green Grid and the EU Code of Conduct for Datacentres.”

For further details on the Maylands datacentre facility, please contact the Gyron sales team.

Yesterday, the BBC had a detailed article on the front page of their news website about a new high speed fibre cable being installed in to East Africa. Along with the article, there were some interesting network maps, provided by Telegeography.

We have a large Telegeography world submarine cable map on the wall in the reception area of our Centro datacentre facility, which always attracts a lot of attention and scrutiny from the slightly geekier of our visitors. The maps are also available to download as desktop wallpaper.

Centro reception area, with large Telegeography network map

On the subject of submarine cable systems, there is a detailed and fascinating (and quite long!) article by the well known author Neal Stephenson available in the Wired magazine archives here. It’s certainly worth checking out if the subject interests you.

Robin Balen, Managing Director at Gyron states:

Our Centro datacentre in Hemel Hempstead has been built from the ground up with high density power and cooling systems, along with diverse dark fibre connectivity. This, coupled with our location just outside of the M25, makes the facility an ideal choice for disaster recovery and cloud computing applications. Connectivity to the end user’s premises is a key part of any such outsourcing strategy, and one which many datacentres overlook. We look forward to working with Fluidata and their wide range of connectivity services to meet this need.

Piers Daniell, Managing Director of Fluidata states:

In today’s climate, it is increasingly important for businesses to consider hosting and virtualisation in the cloud as a viable business initiative.

At Fluidata, our offering includes multiple data centres across the UK operating on a dark fibre network, configured to operate as one: This is a significant development and an important requirement for businesses looking to host key applications within the cloud. Coupled with national last mile coverage it is a compelling business case for virtualisation.

Gyron is featured in this quarter’s edition of the Imtech Telecom Global newsletter. The article details our use of Juniper network equipment in our upgraded core network, and also describes our expansion at our new Centro datacentre facility.

You can download the whole newsletter in PDF form here (we’re on page 6), or you can read below for the article:

To keep up with increasing demand for its co-location, managed hosting and connectivity services, Gyron Internet Ltd has chosen Imtech Telecom Global and partner Juniper Networks to upgrade its core network. The new equipment for its state-of-the-art hosting site in London Docklands will allow Gyron to maintain the highest possible levels of service for its customers as the company expands nationally.

Gyron, established 8 years ago, has become a key player at the Docklands London Hosting Centre, with over 5,000sq ft of high specification hosting space, and is now expanding its high speed fibre network outside of the M25 to a new datacentre in Hemel Hempstead. Initially with a handful of customers and five racks, Gyron’s customer base has now grown to over a hundred customers. These include government departments, IT consultancies, global enterprises, banks, recruitment agencies and internet companies; all serviced by over 160 racks of equipment at Gyron’s London data centre.

With its services in high demand, Gyron required a new strategy to sell additional high capacity services within their existing hosting space, whilst also being able to support significant expansion at their new site. Drawing on Imtech’s established consultancy and support services, Gyron has chosen to upgrade its core London network with two additional Juniper MX240s, and EX-series Ethernet switches. The solution uses JUNOS software and neatly integrates routing, switching and security across Gyron’s high-performance network infrastructure.

Gyron are installing and integrating the new routers to function as a redundant pair, handling all BGP traffic on the network .

Robin Balen, Director for Gyron, stated: “Imtech has always provided a wealth of knowledge and support for our chosen Juniper platforms. Following their advice, we have selected the MX240 routers for our London site where space is at an absolute premium; whilst the MX 960 platform gives us excellent expansion potential at our new datacentre in Hemel Hempstead. I have been impressed with the Imtech’s technical ability and capabilities in implementing Juniper technologies and its proven track record in successful network deployments, both to the smaller ISPs and larger global carriers.“ Gyron are also undertaking upgrades to its 300gbps DWDM fibre ring which now connects its London Docklands hosting site and its new data centre which will house over 400 racks when it opens in mid-2009.

James Morgan, MD Imtech Telecom Global, said “it is good to see UK entrepreneurs such as the Gyron team achieving so much in such a short time; undoubtedly the Juniper platforms coupled with the easy adoption of JUNOS have helped to enable this growth and we welcome working with forward thinking innovative organisations such as Gyron.”

The first phase of the fibre equipment for our new “Centro” datacentre site in Hemel Hempstead arrived at our London offices today.

Fibre equipment delivery arrives on-site

Construction is under way on our new fibre network, consisting of nearly 160km of private dark fibre (G.652 and G655) in a redundant ring connection between two London datacentres (both existing core fibre POPs on our network) and our new Centro site. Latency back to London is predicted to be very low, with 0.3ms on the primary leg, and 0.4ms on the longer secondary leg.

16x10G DWDM multiplexer module

We’re using DWDM technology to multiplex up to 16x10G channels over each fibre pair – giving a total network capacity of 320G. Each 10G channel can be dedicated to a single 10GigE connection for a customer, split up in to multiple 1G channels for 1GigE networking requirements, or can handle multiple Fibre Channel connections for SAN use. The modules contain tunable DWDM lasers, allowing us to configure, in software, what wavelength each module will use on the fibre. This means we can keep one part as a spare and configure it for use on any channel for rapid deployment.

In-line amplifiers

Due to the redundant leg of the fibre ring being a longer distance, we regenerate the signal at a POP site using in-line amplifiers. These boost the signal strength across the entire DWDM channel range. This also gives us the opportunity to insert an add/drop module at this site in the future to bring in additional redundant connectivity outside of London.

Partially populated equipment chassis

The first phase of the equipment is now ready for testing. We will receive delivery of appropriate line cards for customer connections as we need them.

We’re pleased to announce that after extensive planning, we will shortly commence work on upgrading our core network infrastructure.

We expect to start work on the network upgrades in mid-October, and will be installing two new core routers, utilizing the Juniper MX routing platform. The MX 240 routers give us 240gbps of routing capacity in a compact chassis, along with redundant switching control boards and power supplies. We will be initially deploying these with 40x1GE SFP ports, leaving plenty of capacity for future upgrades, including 10GB port options.

Juniper MX 240 core router

These MX 240 routers will function as a redundant pair, handling all BGP traffic on our network. In addition to these new routers, we are replacing our existing core switches with new Juniper EX switches. These EX4200 switches support 48x1GE and 2x10GE ports in a 1U chassis, with redundant power supplies, and full stacking capabilities.

Juniper EX4200 core switch

We will also be making upgrades to our metro dark fibre ring and DWDM equipment in order to prepare for integration with our new national fibre loop which will connect to our new datacenter site.

Overseeing the upgrade work will be our full time Network Architect, who joined our management team in July this year. We have always strongly believed in encouraging growth by continually investing in our hosting and network infrastructure. This latest project, with a value exceeding £200,000, continues this tradition, and ensures that we keep ahead of our customers’ high capacity network requirements.
