Press release: Gyron Internet upgrades core network with Imtech and Juniper

Gyron is featured in this quarter’s edition of the Imtech Telecom Global newsletter. The article details our use of Juniper network equipment in our upgraded core network, and also describes our expansion at our new Centro datacentre facility.

You can download the whole newsletter in PDF form here (we’re on page 6), or you can read below for the article:

To keep up with increasing demand for its co-location, managed hosting and connectivity services, Gyron Internet Ltd has chosen Imtech Telecom Global and partner Juniper Networks to upgrade its core network. The new equipment for its state-of-the-art hosting site in London Docklands will allow Gyron to maintain the highest possible levels of service for its customers as the company expands nationally.

Gyron, established 8 years ago, has become a key player at the Docklands London Hosting Centre, with over 5,000sq ft of high specification hosting space, and is now expanding its high speed fibre network outside of the M25 to a new datacentre in Hemel Hempstead. Initially with a handful of customers and five racks, Gyron’s customer base has now grown to over a hundred customers. These include government departments, IT consultancies, global enterprises, banks, recruitment agencies and internet companies; all serviced by over 160 racks of equipment at Gyron’s London data centre.

With its services in high demand, Gyron required a new strategy to sell additional high capacity services within their existing hosting space, whilst also being able to support significant expansion at their new site. Drawing on Imtech’s established consultancy and support services, Gyron has chosen to upgrade its core London network with two additional Juniper MX240s, and EX-series Ethernet switches. The solution uses JUNOS software and neatly integrates routing, switching and security across Gyron’s high-performance network infrastructure.

Gyron are installing and integrating the new routers to function as a redundant pair, handling all BGP traffic on the network .

Robin Balen, Director for Gyron, stated: “Imtech has always provided a wealth of knowledge and support for our chosen Juniper platforms. Following their advice, we have selected the MX240 routers for our London site where space is at an absolute premium; whilst the MX 960 platform gives us excellent expansion potential at our new datacentre in Hemel Hempstead. I have been impressed with the Imtech’s technical ability and capabilities in implementing Juniper technologies and its proven track record in successful network deployments, both to the smaller ISPs and larger global carriers.“ Gyron are also undertaking upgrades to its 300gbps DWDM fibre ring which now connects its London Docklands hosting site and its new data centre which will house over 400 racks when it opens in mid-2009.

James Morgan, MD Imtech Telecom Global, said “it is good to see UK entrepreneurs such as the Gyron team achieving so much in such a short time; undoubtedly the Juniper platforms coupled with the easy adoption of JUNOS have helped to enable this growth and we welcome working with forward thinking innovative organisations such as Gyron.”

First phase of fibre equipment for new datacentre site delivered

The first phase of the fibre equipment for our new “Centro” datacentre site in Hemel Hempstead arrived at our London offices today.

Fibre equipment delivery arrives on-site

Construction is under way on our new fibre network, consisting of nearly 160km of private dark fibre (G.652 and G655) in a redundant ring connection between two London datacentres (both existing core fibre POPs on our network) and our new Centro site. Latency back to London is predicted to be very low, with 0.3ms on the primary leg, and 0.4ms on the longer secondary leg.

16x10G DWDM multiplexer module

We’re using DWDM technology to multiplex up to 16×10G channels over each fibre pair – giving a total network capacity of 320G. Each 10G channel can be dedicated to a single 10GigE connection for a customer, split up in to multiple 1G channels for 1GigE networking requirements, or can handle multiple Fibre Channel connections for SAN use. The modules contain tunable DWDM lasers, allowing us to configure, in software, what wavelength each module will use on the fibre. This means we can keep one part as a spare and configure it for use on any channel for rapid deployment.

In-line amplifiers

Due to the redundant leg of the fibre ring being a longer distance, we regenerate the signal at a POP site using in-line amplifiers. These boost the signal strength across the entire DWDM channel range. This also gives us the opportunity to insert an add/drop module at this site in the future to bring in additional redundant connectivity outside of London.

The first phase of the equipment is now ready for testing. We will receive delivery of appropriate line cards for customer connections as we need them.

Time-lapse video showing LHC 2nd floor rack fit-out

We recently fitted out around 2,200 sq ft of new datacenter space at the London Hosting Center.

After the core plant equipment (e.g. air conditioning down-flow units, FM200 fire suppression etc) was installed, the IP CCTV cameras went up and we were able to grab images to make the following time-lapse movie showing all 68 APC NetShelter enclosures being installed over a 4 day period:

Thanks to all of our techs on-site and our fit-out contractors for the hard work getting this new suite online!

Gyron selects Telstra Europe as Facilities Partner

Gyron Internet Ltd, a leading wholesale and managed services provider for medium sized UK businesses, has signed a long-term, multi-million pound contract with leading business telecoms service provider, Telstra Europe, to run its main hosting facilities in Telstra’s datacentre in London’s Docklands.

Gyron’s primary objective in changing supplier was to stabilise operational expenditure for both space and power and ensure availability of additional technical space to support anticipated growth. It also required a datacentre with enough on-site office space for its team of Network Operating Centre engineers, who are on call 24 hours a day.

Telstra was selected because of its impressive state-of-the-art Docklands datacentre, its competitive pricing, its strong reputation for hosting and the strength of its account management and technical teams, all of which set it apart from its competitors.

Gyron Internet Ltd was so impressed by Telstra’s datacentre facility that it took over 200 square metres of technical space in November 2006 – three times its original requirements, in anticipation of future growth. The company has since acquired several new customers and is adding another 95 square metres of space, with further capacity for more servers should the expansion continue.

Robin Balen, Director of Gyron commented, “We were frustrated with the price hikes, lack of expansion room and inconsistent account management with our previous supplier. Telstra offered an excellent long term commercial deal providing us with the stability we required in order to expand our business”.

“The support provided by Telstra’s dedicated team of account and facilities managers was also second to none throughout the initial consultation and fit-out period. This high standard has been maintained now that we are live. Nothing is ever a problem – even when we had a query at 10pm on the Sunday night before we moved into the datacentre they were happy to help us”.

Simon Vye, CEO, Telstra Europe, added, “The demands for hosting, co-location and business continuity services have rapidly increased. The market has become increasingly more competitive and is showing no signs of slowing down. However, there is no excuse for hosting providers to fail on the service levels they provide, or to charge extortionate pricing. We are delighted to have been selected by Gyron on the strengths of our facilities, account management and commercial proposition and look forward to many years of successful partnership”.
